How to Format a Children’s Book in Canva for Amazon KDP

A Canva design can look finished on screen and still need changes before it becomes a paperback. Start with the print format, make a test page and review the exported file before you upload it.

This article focuses on paperback preparation. A Kindle edition needs a separate formatting workflow.

Start with the print choices

Decide on the finished book size, color option and page count. Check that the combination is supported before setting up your design. Use KDP’s current format table rather than copying the dimensions from an unrelated template.

Decide whether artwork reaches the edge

Bleed allows a printed picture to reach the trimmed edge. The interior file size changes when you use bleed. Margins keep words and important parts of the illustration safely inside the page. Follow the measurements for your chosen format in KDP’s linked guidance.

Make one page before making the whole book

Set up a custom-size Canva design for the required interior dimensions. Build one sample page with your chosen font, text placement and illustration. View it at a realistic size and ask someone to read it aloud. Check the text against busy areas of the picture and keep faces and important details away from the trim and binding edges.

Use that page to establish consistent spacing across the book. A repeated layout should still allow room for quiet scenes, bigger moments and changes in the rhythm of the story.

Review the exported interior

For a paperback interior with bleed, KDP requires a PDF. Upload individual pages, not paired spreads, and leave crop marks out of the submitted file. Review KDP’s paperback submission guidelines before export.

Open the PDF itself and check every page for missing images, changed line breaks and clipped text. Keep the interior file separate from the cover. The paperback cover must fit the final book configuration, including its spine.

Check the uploaded book and a physical proof

Use KDP’s preview tools, correct flagged problems and inspect a physical proof. Look at readability, page turns and how the artwork prints. A screen preview cannot answer every question about the finished paperback.
